Description

Wildlife biologist and nature writer Paul L. Errington (an environmental visionary who counted Aldo Leopold as a close friend) spent his career redefining our understanding of vertebrate population dynamics, especially as related to muskrat predation in Iowa's glacial marshes. Throughout his career he cast a light onto the shadows of ecology, and his discoveries, especially those on predation and wetland conservation, called for a rethinking of environmental mysteries well beyond the realm of muskrats and marshes. Striking for its passion, wit, and ecological insight, Errington's nature writing is also uncommonly literary. It is characterized not only by profound ecological contributions, but also by an appreciation for the aesthetics of language, by the inclusion of personal narratives, and by an overarching attention to the humanistic implications of his ideas. After his death in 1962, Errington left behind several unpublished manuscripts at various stages of completion. During his life, his wife Carolyn had served as his typist, copyeditor, and sounding board, but with his death her role expanded to that of compiler, editor, and literary executor. Carolyn took up the difficult work of seeing his manuscripts revised and published, and the first one she worked on was Of Predation and Life, a project they had been revising when he died. As her corrections to his manuscripts indicate, Carolyn, then an English professor at Iowa State University, played a significant role in the final disposition of his work.
